The story of Jekyll and Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson is full of suspense which is why this story is so good. In my essay I will be talking about the reason why and how Stevenson causes suspense and mystery.
Chapter 2 “search for Hyde” has a lot of mystery and suspense because of the line “all his possessions were to pass into the hands of his friend and benefactor Edward Hyde”which creates a sense of mystery which we have to solve because as we know from chapter 1 Hyde trampled over the little girl which makes Hyde a evil person which leaves us thinking why would Jekyll want to pass over all his possessions to such a cruel man instead of giving it to Utterson. This causes a lot of questions to occur which makes us curious and want to unlock the mystery which also creates suspense because we can’t unlock the mystery straight away.
Stevenson was using dramatic irony to give us clues which the characters don’t see. The effect this gives the audience and the structure of the book is that it gives us hints which Utterson doesn’t see which makes us able to guess and give a prediction of how the story can play out and also causes suspense because we know what’s going to happen but we can’t do anything about it.
